Rockfall Monitoring

Rockfall Monitoring uses LiDAR to accurately detect rocks or debris that would obstruct the safe travel of the train.

Rockfall Monitoring is a revolutionary system that uses LiDAR technology to detect rocks on the track and drop a signal remotely.

This eliminates the need for railroaders to visit the site and re-string slidefence, which can be time-consuming and expensive.

Rockfalls are a major safety hazard for railways, as it can cause derailments and other accidents. Traditional rockfall monitoring systems use slide fences, which are triggered when a rock falls through them. However, these systems have a false positive rate of greater than 95%, which can cause significant train delays.

Product Benefits:

  • Accurately detects rocks and debris

  • Alarms comes with event pictures

  • No repairs necessary after an alarm

  • No heavy construction equipment required to install

  • rockfall LiDAR installed next to a railroad track running through a tunnel in a mountainside.

Rockfall Monitoring provides a method of detecting obstacles on the track itself, to enable the need to send a railroader to an often remote site. Currently, trains are delayed at signal while this happens, delaying both their shipments and those of the following trains, incurring costs along the way. Rockfall Monitoring optimizes both detection of hazardous obstacles on track as well as the journey of trains through rockfall prone territories.
