Baker Street Station - Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression Services

Baker Street station is situated at the heart of Westminster. It is one of the original stations of the Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first underground railway, opened on 10 January 1863. With ten platforms overall, Baker Street has the most London Underground platforms of any station on the London Underground network.

New retail units have been created at the station as part of a strategic masterplan and programme of commercial and civic enhancements. The masterplan has remodelled Baker Street station as a key retail destination, creating a 7,000m2 retail courtyard at street level. The courtyard and station are served by a vibrant new public realm fronting Marylebone Road.

L.B. Foster Telecoms (TEW Plus Ltd) was subcontracted by primary contractor Harry Grover (Decorations) Limited, to install automatic fire detection and suppression services in the ground floor and basement levels of the station’s new retail units.

Requirement

New retail units have been created at Baker Street station as part of a strategic masterplan and programme of commercial and civic enhancements. L.B. Foster Telecoms (TEW Plus Ltd) was commissioned to install automatic fire detection and suppression services in the ground floor and basement levels of each of the station’s new retail units.

Health & Safety

L.B. Foster Telecoms (TEW Plus) is committed to the highest standards of health and safety for our people and the contractors with which we work. The rail network is a hazardous place and we comply with London Underground’s Contract Standard S 1552 (QUENSH). We worked in collaboration with the principal contractor to achieve this, ensuring works were conducted in accordance with relevant policies and procedures. This includes:

  • Ensuring our staff carried up to date Sentinel Cards

  • Providing a qualified and experienced site person in charge to supervise staff and ensure the site was set up correctly

  • Undertaking drug and alcohol testing in compliance with London Underground’s requirements

  • Taking part in daily site briefings with the principal contractor and collaborating with other contractors’ operatives

  • Using site specific risk assessments, method statement and work plans

  • Maintaining accurate records of site attendance by operatives

  • Checking operatives wear full PPE correctly

Our Solution

L.B. Foster Telecoms (TEW Plus Ltd) worked with Harry Grover (Decorations) Limited and Transport for London to design, install and commission automatic fire detection and suppression services in new retail units at Baker Street station.

Our solution comprises a standalone fire detection system, with a loop control panel at the street level entrance of each unit. The fire control panel in each unit is monitored and controlled from the station’s central fire control system.

All new fire detection interfaces are mounted with 6” x 6” x 3” galvanised enclosures. A series of manual call points include signage mounted adjacent to each for call point activation. Spacing of all detection and manual activation points is in compliance with BS 5839-1 2017 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings – Part 1: Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises.

New sprinkler pipework is installed from the SVC adjacent to each retail unit, and a new monitored valve and flow switch is installed within the SVC. All new pipework includes 10mm stud and Unistrut bracketry, which is installed independently of all other services in the ground floor and basement levels of the station’s new retail units. The new, heavy duty galvanised pipework runs through both levels of the units.

“It was a pleasure having both L.B. Foster Detection and Suppression teams involved with the Coop at Baker street refurbishment, the attitude during some very trying days was excellent from all the L.B. foster contractors. A special mention to Ricky Norrington who couldn’t do enough to help us and gave us valuable TfL advise.“
