London Underground (LUL) has awarded a prestigious Beacon award for two sites at Debden and Ickenham stations, where L.B. Foster (Tew Plus Ltd) is working with principal contractor Geoffrey Osborne Ltd to deliver step-free accessibility on the LUL network.
L.B. Foster Telecoms is delivering four packages at both stations, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering; station telecoms and security; and integrated fire protection.
LUL recognises suppliers who demonstrate good practice in site management through the Beacon scheme, contributing to an excellent safety record on London Underground projects and ensuring that all work at project sites and maintenance depots is undertaken safely and considerately.
I have just heard the great news that Ickenham and Debden stations have now both passed the final assessment and achieved Beacon Award status. This is fantastic news for us, our suppliers and London Underground Limited. I am fully aware of the amount of hard work required to achieve this, over several assessments and demonstrating continued high standards of compliance over a prolonged period.
Scott Fitzgerald, Head of Operations, L.B. Foster Telecoms (Tew Plus Ltd), adds: “It’s a welcome reward to receive this accreditation from LUL. As a business, we set ourselves the highest standards when it comes to health and safety.”
Ickenham London Underground station is on the Uxbridge branch of both the Metropolitan line and Piccadilly line, between Ruislip and Hillingdon stations. Debden London Underground station is on the Central line in the east of Loughton, in the Epping Forest district of Essex.
The Beacon award scheme recognises suppliers who demonstrate outstanding performance in health and safety. Transport for London only awards this accolade to contractors who consistently demonstrate a commitment to improving and maintaining high standards of health and safety.
The Beacon scheme is based on the Considerate Constructors Scheme, but demands even higher standards and has additional requirements, because of the potentially hazardous rail environment. Tube Lines introduced the scheme in 2006 to help ensure that all work at its project sites and maintenance depots is undertaken safely and considerately.
The criteria for the Beacon site award fall into five categories: Consideration Environment Cleanliness Safety and health Management and values.
