Introduction
Rail transport in London is going through a period of massive enhancement. The scale of the projects is unprecedented. Constructing new routes which interchange with the current network, while operating existing services and introducing additional service offerings, is a huge challenge with great potential benefits for the network. L.B. Foster Telecoms is fulfilling an essential role as part of the network improvements on the London Overground West Anglia Station Projects (LOWASP). We were contracted by infrastructure specialist J Murphy & Sons, on behalf of Arriva Rail London, to deliver station upgrade and refurbishment works in compliance with specifications detailed by London Overground Rail Operations Ltd (LOROL).
Requirement
L.B. Foster Telecoms was contracted by J Murphy & Sons to supply, install and commission integrated Station Information and Surveillance Systems (SISS) at 10 London Overground stations, incorporating:
Public Address (PA)
CCTV
PHP
Customer Information Systems (CIS)
Local Area Networks (LAN).
This was delivered at Bethnal Green, Cambridge Heath, Edmonton Green, London Fields, White Hart Lane, Southbury, Turkey Street, Enfield Town, Hackney Downs and Theobalds Grove.
Our integrated solution included a PA system covering all public areas of the stations, in compliance with Network Rail standards, inclusive of control equipment, audio routers, amplifiers, speakers, microphones, microphone receivers, ambient noise sensors and associated cabling.
We also supplied and installed CCTV systems at each station to cover all public areas including all cameras, encoders, decoders, network video recorders, storage arrays, passenger awareness monitors, review stations and associated cabling.
The interface between CCTV and PHP systems was purposely configured for functionality, initiating automatic alarm recording with synchronised audio of activated help points, combined with automatic alarm camera view display on the staff area workstation monitor.
In addition, we supplied and installed CIS systems with new NTI and SOD displays on platforms, underpasses and ticket halls. A large number of screens were replaced and migrated as per an agreed migration plan to ensure operation during station operational hours.
As the main contractor on this project J Murphy & Sons was seeking a strong, collaborative partnership with its sub-contractors. We found a like-minded organisation in the team at L.B. Foster Telecoms. And when it came to commissioning the new LOWASP SISS, the team was clearly well experienced at such matters, delivering a pain-free experience and handover.”
