Introduction
LUL Depot Security & Communications Upgrade
Fifteen of London Underground Limited’s rail depots and sidings have undergone a major programme of capital investment to improve safety for staff and increase the security of assets. Improvements are the result of a number of incidents involving intruders that have compromised site and individual safety. These have included attacks on staff, as well as theft and attempted theft of materials.
L.B. Foster Telecoms designed, installed and commissioned a sophisticated new security solution.
Requirements
L.B. Foster Telecoms was contracted by London Underground Limited to install new, advanced integrated security systems at each of the depots/sidings. The security solution comprised CCTV, digital recording, intruder/perimeter detection and front-end Graphical User Interface (GUI) controls. Design, installation, commissioning, testing and handover was managed by L.B. Foster Telecom’s specialist security team at:

Our Solution
Working closely with London Underground Limited, we designed and delivered a sophisticated security solution incorporating an innovative, fully integrated Bosch analytics system over Axxon front end platform. This solution avoided the installation of physical infrared intruder detection systems.
Once an intruder is detected on a fixed view camera, a Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) camera in a nearby position zooms in on the intruder position, providing intruder facial identification images. Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) is a type of IP camera where the user controls the movement and position of the lens from a remote location using controls on an Internet browser or software application. Panning refers to the horizontal movement of the lens where tilting describes vertical movement. All systems were successfully handed over to London Underground Limited.
The security and safety issues that we faced at a number of our depots and sidings presented a real and present danger to our staff and our assets. The team at L.B. Foster Telecoms demonstrated a clear understanding of the brief, as well as offering added value insight and advice. What was delivered was a solution that ticked all the boxes, on time and to budget.
